It is up for debate with regards to the exact derivation and evolution of this diminutive stringed instrument. It is generally conceded that the Charango originated shortly after the Spanish conquistadors arrived, so it is possibly inspired by their vihuela, banduria or lutes.

The Charango has 5 pairs of strings tuned G C E A E. If you ignore the high E string, what remains is essentially a ukulele, which is the highest four strings of a guitar capoed at the fifth fret. All of your guitar chord shapes will work on strings 2-5, then just use your ear to find the right note on the high E!
